Most short forms of this shape end in -ie and a few end in -y, and the choice is not random: -ie reads as older and warmer, -y as plainer and more modern. Cassy takes the y, which puts it with Kathy and Sally rather than with Maggie and Hattie.

Where it comes from

The story of Cassy

In the oldest text she appears in there is no prophecy at all. Homer gives her a few lines: she is the most beautiful of the king's daughters, she is the first to see her father bringing her brother's body home, and she raises the alarm. Nothing about foresight, nothing about a curse, nothing about being disbelieved. All of that arrives centuries later with the tragedians, who found a use for a figure who knows what is coming and cannot make anybody act on it. The character everybody knows is a dramatist's invention built on a name Homer used for someone else entirely.

The fuller name's meaning has never been settled; proposals involve entangling and involve shining and none is secure. The short form inherits the uncertainty and adds nothing.

Cassy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1986, with 105 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Cassy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, brisk and completely easy on first hearing.
  • The y ending reads plainer and less dated than the alternative.
  • It works as a full name rather than only as a shortening.
What to consider
  • Cassie is far commoner and this spelling gets corrected constantly.
  • It reads as a short form to some people even when it is the legal name.
  • The fuller name's meaning cannot be given, whatever other pages assert.
