Casi is the shortest written form of a name that America has spelled a dozen ways, and the name itself is best known from a poem about a man who fails. Casey at the Bat is the most recited piece of verse in American English, and its author spent years insisting it was nothing much and refusing to be associated with it.

Where it comes from

The story of Casi

Ernest Thayer wrote the poem for a San Francisco newspaper in 1888 and signed it with a nickname from his college days. It would have vanished like everything else on that page except that a stage actor picked it up, recited it at a baseball benefit, and then went on reciting it for the rest of his career — by his own count something like ten thousand times, until it had buried everything else he ever did. Thayer, a Harvard graduate who had gone into his family's mills, was embarrassed by the whole business, declined to claim the poem for years, and never made a penny out of the most famous American poem of its century.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The sound comes from an Irish surname, and the spellings that carry it in America — Casey, Kasey, Casi, Kacey — have separated far enough from that surname that most families using them have no connection to it at all. This particular spelling is a written choice with nothing behind it: it does not indicate a different origin, a different pronunciation or a different longer name. It indicates that somebody, at some point, wrote the name with four letters.

How the name formed

  1. an Irish surname carried to America
  2. Casey established as an American first name
  3. a newspaper poem makes it a byword in 1888
  4. the spellings multiply through the twentieth century
  5. Casi appears among them in the 1960s

Casi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 56 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Casi sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters, no ambiguity in speech, and about as economical as the name can be written.
  • It works for a daughter or a son, which the whole family of spellings does.
  • The sound is warm and informal without being childish.
What to consider
  • Casey is far commoner and will be written instead on nearly everything.
  • The bare final i dates a certificate fairly precisely to the last decades of the century.
  • There is no longer name behind it and no meaning to give her.
