Where it comes from

Our story of Carylon

The Latin form of Charles has been attached to a great many things and almost never to the same person twice. The Carolingian dynasty is named after Charles Martel, the grandfather of Charlemagne, rather than Charlemagne himself. The Carolinas are named after an English king, or possibly after his father, depending on which charter you read and which century you are in; the original French claim to the same coast had already been named for a French king of the same name. And the Caroline of the women's names is a feminine formed from the Latin in the seventeenth century, which arrived in England with a queen and stayed. Four different Charleses, one root, and nothing to connect them except a name that Europe could not stop using.

Fashion outlook

Carylon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is thoroughly familiar, so nobody is ever at a loss for how to say it.
  • Caryl and Lyn are both available as short forms and both stand alone.
  • It is visually distinct from the far commoner spelling, which is what the rearrangement is for.
What to consider
  • Carolyn and Caroline are both far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected constantly.
  • The letters are easy to put back in the usual order by mistake, including by the person writing them.
  • No reason for the spelling is documented, so there is nothing to say when someone asks why.
