The y-for-o substitution is not one of the common ones, which is what makes this spelling interesting: y usually replaces an i, and replacing a vowel that is not an i changes the look of a name much more sharply. The result reads as Welsh to English eyes because Welsh uses y as a vowel constantly — Cymru, Dyfed, Gwynedd. So the spelling borrows an appearance rather than an origin. It goes to boys and girls both, which is true of Carol as well and was true long before it stopped being true of Carol.
