Where it comes from

Our story of Carrieann

Latin borrowed very little from Gaulish, and what it did borrow tells you what the Gauls were better at. Carrus was a wagon, and it is a Celtic word: Caesar's armies met Gaulish vehicles and took the word along with the design. From carrus English has car, carry, carriage, cargo, career — which originally meant a racecourse or a gallop — and charge, which is a load. The same borrowing pattern gave Latin words for a chariot, a barrel and certain kinds of cart, and almost nothing else. Gaulish died out without leaving a grammar, so the handful of words Latin took from it are a substantial part of what survives of the language, and most of them are about moving things on wheels.

The front is a familiar form of Caroline or Carol, which descend from a Germanic word for a free man. The back is a familiar form of Anne, from the Hebrew Hannah. Neither is a full name and nothing records which the family used.

Fashion outlook

Carrieann sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are familiar, so nothing has to be spelled out by sound.
  • It collapses to either half and both are complete names.
  • Written solid it occupies one field on a form instead of two.
What to consider
  • Carrie Ann and Carrie-Ann are both recorded, and systems will split it.
  • Neither half is a formal name, so there is no long version to fall back on.
  • It reads as belonging firmly to one American generation.
