The best-known bearer of the fuller spelling took a hatchet to the furniture. Carry Nation was a Kansas woman of formidable size and conviction who, in the years before national prohibition, walked into saloons and destroyed them — first with rocks, then with a hatchet she sold souvenir copies of to pay her fines. She was arrested some thirty times, wrote her own newspaper, and was a national spectacle for a decade. The name itself is much older and quieter than she was: a short form of Caroline that became independent in the nineteenth century, and that American spelling then rewrote as Carrie, Cari, Carri and Karrie.
