Take the e off Caroline and the last syllable changes. English uses a final silent e to lengthen the vowel before it, which is the whole difference between fin and fine and between Carolin and Caroline. One letter, doing nothing itself, controls how the syllable in front of it is read.

Where it comes from

The story of Carolin

The Caroline who made the name English ran the country whenever her husband was out of it. Caroline of Ansbach, married to the second George, was regent four times while he was in Hanover, and by every account of the period she was the more capable of the two: she managed the ministry, kept Walpole in office, argued philosophy by correspondence with Leibniz, and had herself inoculated against smallpox along with her children at a time when the procedure was a gamble and the demonstration mattered. Her name went into common English use during her lifetime and stayed. The Carolinas were named for a different Charles and the two are often confused, which is understandable, since it is the same name underneath.

Meaning

Free man, in the feminine

Caroline is the French feminine of the Latin Carolus, itself the Latin form of Charles, from a Germanic word for a free man of no rank. The name therefore describes a social category from the early Middle Ages, filtered through Latin, French and a long line of queens, and means nothing about the child who carries it.

Pronouncing Carolin

KAR-uh-lin

Three syllables with the stress at the front and a short final vowel, which is exactly what dropping the e produces. The standard spelling ends in the vowel of line; this one ends in the vowel of tin, and the difference is audible.

Carolin sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1942, with 39 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Carolin sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The change is one of the few respellings that actually alters the sound, so it is doing real work.
  • Caro and Carrie are two short forms in quite different registers, one formal and one warm.
  • The name is recognizable across German, Italian, Spanish, French and Swedish.
What to consider
  • Because the ending genuinely differs, people who know the standard name will say it wrong rather than spell it wrong.
  • Caroline is enormously commoner and the e will be added back by well-meaning strangers.
  • Carolyn, with a y, is a third spelling and a third pronunciation, and all three circulate together.
