Where it comes from

Our story of Carolene

Carrots were purple, white, yellow and red long before they were orange, and the modern orange carrot was developed in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century. The most repeated explanation is patriotic, that Dutch growers bred them in the color of the House of Orange, and historians regard that as decoration on a simpler story: the orange varieties were sweeter and stored better, so they won. The pigment responsible is carotene, which is named after the carrot and which the body converts into vitamin A, which is the small kernel of truth inside the wartime propaganda about carrots and night vision.

Fashion outlook

Carolene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Carol comes off the front as a short form and is a complete name on its own.
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so it is never a puzzle to say.
  • Three syllables with a strong front stress carry well across a room.
What to consider
  • Caroline and Carolyn are both far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • The ending cannot be heard, so the spelling has to be given aloud every time.
  • It reads as a name of an older American generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
