Carolanne
Feminine · “Song of joy”
The Christmas carol was nearly extinct and the Victorians rebuilt it. By the early nineteenth century the old ones survived mostly as broadsheets sold in the street and half-remembered tunes in country parishes; collectors went out, wrote them down, printed them, and in some cases wrote new ones and passed them off as old.

The story of Carolanne
The other half of this name is barely in the Bible. The mother of Mary is not mentioned anywhere in the New Testament; her name comes from the Protoevangelium of James, a second-century text that the church did not accept as scripture and that shaped Christian art and devotion anyway. Almost everything popularly known about Mary's childhood comes from it, and Anne became one of the most widely venerated saints in Europe on the strength of a book officially regarded as unreliable. The name went everywhere, into royal houses and parish registers alike, and by the time it reached American compound names nobody was thinking about any of it.

Song of joy, plus grace
Carol as a given name is generally taken as a feminine of Charles by way of Caroline, though the English word for a song has attached itself to it firmly enough that most families mean both. Anne is from Hannah, a word about favor. The compound means nothing beyond its halves standing side by side.

Fashion outlook
Carolanne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves are entirely familiar in English, so the name is understood at once.
- Carol and Annie are two complete names sitting inside it.

- Carolann, Carol Anne and Carolanne all exist, so the written form has to be specified.
- Compound names of this shape are firmly dated to the middle of the last century.
