Carmon writes the ending with an o, and the effect is to move the name sideways into a different category. Cannon, Harmon, Vernon, Gordon and Sharon all close the same way, and most of them are surnames. A woman's name that had a clear Spanish shape ends up looking, on the page, like a family name, which is part of why the spelling appears on the register for sons as well as daughters.

Where it comes from

The story of Carmon

The mountain is a real ridge running down to the sea in what is now northern Israel, and it has been a religious site for a very long time. In the twelfth century a group of Latin hermits settled on it, organized themselves into a community, and took their name from the place: the Carmelites, a contemplative order that began not as a foundation by a saint but as a collection of individuals who happened to be living on the same hillside and eventually wrote a rule. The order spread across Europe, the Marian title attached to it spread with it, and in Spain the title became one of the most-used women's names in the language. That is an unusual route for a name to travel: from a geographical feature, through a group of hermits, to a title, to a name.

Meaning

from a Marian title

The Spanish name comes from a title of the Virgin attached to a mountain in the Levant, and the connection is documented and not in doubt. It is not the Latin word for a song, which is a separate word that happens to be spelled the same way, and the confusion between them is very old and very persistent. The English respelling changes nothing about the source; it changes only which family of English words the eye reaches for.

How the name formed

  1. A mountain ridge in the eastern Mediterranean
  2. A community of hermits taking their name from it
  3. A Marian title, and then a Spanish woman's name
  4. Carmon as an English respelling with a surname shape

Carmon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1968, with 47 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Carmon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is completely familiar and will never need repeating.
  • It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
  • It has a genuine and traceable Spanish history rather than an invented one.
What to consider
  • Carmen is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected into it constantly.
  • The o ending makes it read as a surname on paper, which cuts both ways.
  • The old confusion with the Latin word for a song will follow the name wherever it goes.
