The story of Carmelia
Names that sound like sweets often are not, and this one sits next to a genuinely unsettled case. Nobody has established where the English word caramel comes from. One account takes it through Spanish and Portuguese back to a late Latin diminutive meaning a little reed or stalk, on the reasoning that sugar was sold in cane form. Another takes it from a medieval Latin compound meaning sugar-cane honey, which is a better fit for the substance and a worse fit for the sounds. A third route, through Arabic, has been proposed and mostly abandoned. The word arrived in English from French in the eighteenth century meaning burnt sugar and nothing else; the soft chewy sweet is a later American development. The name here has no connection to any of it — the resemblance is three letters — but the word is a good reminder that an ordinary thing can have a thoroughly unresolved history.
Meaning
garden land, planted ground
The Hebrew word behind the place name describes cultivated country — an orchard or a vineyard on good soil — rather than anything about gardens in the ornamental sense. The ia ending added here is a modern American lengthening and carries nothing of its own.

Fashion outlook
Carmelia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Four syllables give three short forms that sound nothing like each other.
- The meaning is documented and concrete: a real place with a real description.
- It is at home in Italian and Spanish mouths as well as English ones.
- Carmela, Carmella and Carmelita are all commoner and will be written for it.
- The stressed vowel has no settled value, so the name is said two ways.
- It is long for forms designed around shorter names.
