Carlye is a spelling of a Scottish surname that belongs, in most people's minds, to one couple. Thomas Carlyle wrote the history of the French Revolution twice, because the first manuscript was burned by accident in a friend's house, and Jane Welsh Carlyle wrote letters that a good many readers now think are better than anything her husband published.

Where it comes from

The story of Carlye

The manuscript story is one of the great disasters of English letters. Carlyle finished the first volume of his French Revolution and lent it to John Stuart Mill, in whose house it was used to light a fire — by a maid, according to the traditional account, who found a heap of paper by the grate. Mill arrived at the Carlyles' door white and speechless. Carlyle told him not to worry, went upstairs, and then wrote to his brother that he felt like a man who had lost his savings. He had kept no copy and no notes. He rewrote the whole volume from memory over the following months, and the version everybody has read is the second one.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The surname is generally taken from a place in the Scottish borders, and behind that place lies a British name related to the one behind Carlisle — a fort, and the name of a Celtic god or tribe attached to it. As a woman's first name in America it is a modern development, and this spelling is one of several that turn a surname ending into something that reads as feminine. Whether a family choosing it meant the surname, the actor Carlyle, or simply a variant of Carly is not recorded.

How the name formed

  1. a Scottish border place name behind the surname
  2. the surname carried into England and America
  3. a nineteenth-century writer makes it famous
  4. used as an American girls' first name
  5. Carlye appears among its spellings in the 1940s

Fashion outlook

Carlye sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar and needs no explanation.
  • It carries a real surname with a real history rather than being assembled from parts.
  • It works at any age and does not read as a child's name.
What to consider
  • Carly is much commoner and will be written instead on nearly everything.
  • The final letter is silent and looks to many readers like a mistake.
  • There is no settled meaning to give her, only a border town.
