Carline
Feminine · “free man”
Carline is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 1,656 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Carline is Caroline with the unstressed vowel taken out, which costs the name a syllable and changes its rhythm completely. Caroline is four beats and settles into a long, even shape; Carline is three, and lands harder. The parent name belongs to a queen whose trial for adultery brought London into the streets on her side, which is not the association most people have with it.

The story of Carline
Caroline of Brunswick was married to a man who could not stand her, was excluded from his coronation, and in the summer of the trial that followed found that most of the country had decided she was the wronged party. The government brought a bill to dissolve the marriage on grounds of adultery, which required proving it in the House of Lords in public. Crowds gathered outside. Newspapers printed every day of it. The bill was withdrawn because ministers could see what passing it would cost. The name did not suffer for the association and may have benefited from it, which is the usual pattern when a public quarrel makes somebody sympathetic. The shortened spelling here is later and American, and it does the ordinary thing American spellings do with long inherited names, which is to write down what the mouth actually produces rather than what the page requires.
Meaning
free man, in the feminine
The name descends from the Latin form of Charles, whose root is an Old English and Germanic word for a man of the free but unlanded class. The feminine was built in Italian and then in French, and English took the French one. The meaning is settled and slightly awkward: it describes a rank in a society that no longer exists, and it describes it in the masculine, because the feminine was made from the man's name rather than from the word.
How the name formed
- Carolus, the Latin form of Charles
- Caroline built as a French feminine

Pronouncing Carline
CAR-line
Two syllables in most American families, with the ending rhyming with line, though a substantial minority say car-LEEN and treat the ending as French. Caroline it is not: the missing vowel is missing from the sound as well as from the spelling.

Fashion outlook
Carline sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It gives a family the Caroline connection in a form nobody else in the room will have.
- The shorter rhythm is brisker and less formal than the parent name, which suits some households better.
- Carly and Callie are both available and both entirely unremarkable in daily use.
- It will be read as a misspelling of Caroline by most people who meet it in writing.
- The ending is genuinely unsettled between rhyming with line and rhyming with seen.
- The spelling appears on the register for boys as well as girls, which is unusual for a name of this shape.
