Candi
Feminine · “queen mother”
Candace was a title, not a name. The rulers of the kingdom of Kush, in what is now Sudan, were called kandake — the queen mother's title — and Greek and Latin writers took it for a personal name. The Book of Acts mentions the treasurer of a Candace, and that single verse carried the word into European naming.

The story of Candi
The kandakes of Kush were formidable; one of them faced down a Roman army and negotiated terms with Augustus. Their title became a name in Europe by simple misreading, and it entered English through the Bible. The short form is where the second story begins: Candy is an English word from the sugar trade, arriving through Arabic from Sanskrit, and by the twentieth century Candy and Candi were being given as names in their own right. So the long form is an African royal title and the short form is a sweet, and they have nothing to do with each other.
Meaning
queen mother
Kandake is a Meroitic title borne by a series of powerful women who ruled or co-ruled the kingdom of Kush from Meroe; classical writers mistook the title for the name of an individual, and the mistake stuck. The reading queen mother or royal woman is well established. Quite separately, the English word candy comes from Arabic qandi and ultimately from the Sanskrit khanda, a piece of sugar — an unrelated word that this short form lands squarely on.

Fashion outlook
Candi sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Candace is available as a formal long form with a genuinely remarkable history behind it.
- Two syllables, said correctly by everyone on first sight.
- The Kushite queens are worth knowing about and almost nobody carrying the name has heard of them.
- The short form lands on the word for a sweet, and that association arrives before the queens do.
- Candy and Candi are both in use, and the ending gets written both ways.
- It reads as a nickname on a document, and the long form has to be supplied by the family.
