Where it comes from

The story of Cammy

Virgil gives Camilla an entrance that has stayed in the language. She is a warrior on the losing side, brought up in the wild by a father in exile, dedicated to the huntress goddess, and the poem describes her as so swift that she could have run across a field of unbent wheat or over the surface of the sea without wetting her feet. It is one of the few passages in the Aeneid that readers remember as an image rather than as a plot point. She fights, kills a great many people, and is brought down by a spear thrown by a man who has been waiting for her to be distracted. Virgil gives her a proper death scene, which he does not give most of his characters, and the poem is noticeably sorry to lose her.

Meaningscholars disagree

an attendant at a rite

The Roman word behind the parent name described a freeborn child who assisted a priest at sacrifices, and that is the standard reading. It is not certain, and the word itself may be older than Latin, borrowed from Etruscan along with a good deal of Roman religious vocabulary. Where the parent is Cameron instead, the meaning is entirely different and comes from Gaelic, which is another reason this short form resists a single answer.

How the name formed

  1. A Roman word for a child attending a rite
  2. Camilla in the Aeneid and afterwards
  3. Cammy as a Scottish short form for men

Two syllables, stress on the first, with a short flat a. Scotland says it identically and means a different person by it, which is the sort of thing that only becomes apparent when a family travels.

Cammy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1968, with 70 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Cammy sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, bright and impossible to mispronounce or misspell.
  • Cam is available immediately and works for either child.
  • It has a genuinely good ancient bearer behind it, and the passage is worth reading aloud.
What to consider
  • In Scotland it is a man's name, and a child carrying it will meet that.
  • It reads as a nickname, and people will ask what it is short for.
  • There are at least three possible parent names and no way to choose from the spelling.
