Where it comes from

Our story of Calee

Calico is named after Calicut, the port on the Malabar coast of India where Portuguese ships first landed and where European traders bought the printed cotton that Europe had never seen before. The cloth took the city's name and kept it, in English and in several other languages, long after the trade had moved on. The city itself is now generally called Kozhikode, its own older name, so the fabric in an American sewing basket is carrying a place name that the place has largely stopped using. Calee has no documented connection to any of it. But it is a short name with a long-traveled syllable at the front, and that is worth knowing even when it is a coincidence.

Calee sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 55 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Calee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Five letters and two syllables: easy to write, easy for a child to spell early.
  • Cal and Lee are both available as short forms and both stand alone.
  • The sound is thoroughly familiar even where the spelling is new.
What to consider
  • Two readings of the first vowel are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
  • Callie, Kaylee and Caley are all commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing to answer with.
