Where it comes from

The story of Brice

Brictius was a pupil of Martin of Tours who succeeded him as bishop and, by the accounts that survive, was disliked for a long stretch before being reconciled and eventually venerated. His feast on the thirteenth of November kept the name alive across France and, after the Norman conquest, in England and Scotland, where it settled particularly well and produced the surname Bryce. It reached America and has been in steady if never heavy use, spelled Brice and Bryce roughly equally.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Bricius or Brictius is a Gaulish name Latinized, and Gaulish is thinly recorded — most of what is known comes from inscriptions and place-names. A Celtic element meaning high or noble has been proposed, and so has one meaning speckled or freckled. Neither is established. What is documented is that the name is Celtic rather than Latin, and older than the saint who carried it.

Brice sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 398 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Brice went to 42 boys in 2025, but Bryce is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 961, which makes it the 328th most-given boys’ name of the year — 2,613 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,777 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 40,668 for Brice itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable, said correctly by everyone at first sight.
  • A documented saint and a genuinely old Celtic origin behind it.
  • Short and clean, which pairs well with a longer surname.
What to consider
  • Brice and Bryce are both in use and the spelling gets asked for every time.
  • Its meaning is genuinely unknown, so any gloss offered is a guess among two.
  • One syllable leaves nothing to shorten and no longer form to grow into.
