Where it comes from

The story of Blanche

The name enters the record properly with Blanche of Castile, the Spanish princess who married into the French royal house in the thirteenth century and then governed France as regent for her son. She was formidable enough that the name traveled on her reputation, moving into England with the Norman aristocracy and staying there. Its Italian and Spanish cousins, Bianca and Blanca, took the same word down parallel roads at roughly the same time.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • One syllable and one spelling, which makes it unusually easy to give over a telephone.
  • Bianca and Blanca are the same name in Italian and Spanish, so a bilingual family has a ready equivalent rather than a translation.
  • It has a documented royal history without sounding ornamental.
What to consider
  • Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire is the association a great many English speakers reach for first, and she is a study in fragility. Anyone naming a child Blanche should expect the reference.
  • The word it comes from is still an ordinary adjective in French, so among French speakers the name reads more plainly than it does in English.
