From benedictus to Bennet
The story of Bennet
Benedict of Nursia wrote the Rule that shaped Western monasticism from the sixth century, and his name became one of the most-used in Christian Europe. English speech made Bennet, which became the surname Bennett. Austen's Pride and Prejudice family carries it. The single-t given name is in current use.
Meaning
blessed
From the Latin benedictus, 'blessed' — bene, 'well', and dicere, 'to speak', so literally 'well spoken of'. Medieval English wore Benedictus down to Bennet, which was the ordinary spoken form for centuries before the Latin was restored. The meaning is undisputed.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
