The story of Belinda
Belinda appears in Italian romance and then, decisively, in Pope's The Rape of the Lock in 1712, where the heroine's stolen curl becomes a constellation. That poem was read for two centuries and put the name into English use. American families took it up in the twentieth century, and it rose through the 1950s and 1960s, peaking in the mid-1960s.

The second element is the Germanic lind, which meant 'soft' or 'flexible' and also named the linden tree — it appears in Gerlinde, Rosalind and Sieglinde. The first element is not recovered; the popular reading as the Italian bella, 'beautiful', is a later reinterpretation rather than an etymology.

The Winifred test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Belinda's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Winifred climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Winifred's path sketches the road Belinda is walking now.
Belinda sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
