Beckham
Masculine · Old English roots · “Becca's homestead”
Beckham is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 20,329 boys against 310 girls since 1880.
Beckham began as two small villages in Norfolk, England — East and West Beckham — and traveled the usual English route from place to surname to first name. It is a compact two-syllable word with a hard opening consonant and a soft landing, and it comes with a short form, Beck, that has been in use as a name in its own right for a long time.

Where it comes from
From Becca (Old English personal name) to Beckham
The story of Beckham
The name is Old English in its bones: a personal name, Becca, plus ham, the ordinary word for a homestead or settlement, which together gave the Norfolk villages of East and West Beckham. Families who came from there took the place name with them as a surname, and it spread through England and then, with emigration, across the Atlantic — it has long been a settled American surname, including in Kentucky and Texas political history. Its life as a first name is much newer and owes nearly everything to one man: the English footballer David Beckham, whose fame from the 1990s onward carried the surname into households that had never seen it before. American parents, already comfortable turning surnames into boys' names, picked it up from there.
Meaning
Becca's homestead
Place-name scholarship reads the Norfolk villages as Beccanhām — the ham, or homestead, of a man called Becca. The northern English word beck, meaning a stream, is a separate word from Old Norse and is often assumed to be lurking in the first syllable; it isn't the source here.

Pronouncing Beckham
BEK-um
Two syllables, stress on the first. The h is silent, as in most English place names ending in -ham — so BEK-um rather than beck-HAM. Occasionally you'll hear the fuller beck-HAM from people reading it cold off a page.

The Jaime test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Beckham's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jaime climbed just as high around 1980, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jaime's path sketches the road Beckham is walking now.
Beckham is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Almost everyone can say it correctly on first sight, thanks to decades of the surname being spoken on sports broadcasts worldwide.
- Comes with a ready-made short form, Beck, that works as a standalone name at any age.
- A documented English place name and surname with a traceable Old English origin, not a recent coinage.
- Fits the well-established American pattern of surname first names for boys, so it sits naturally in a modern classroom.
- Practically all of its recognition traces to one living athlete and his family. That link is strong now; it may read as a marker of this particular era later, and football fans will mention him.
- The silent h invites misspellings — Beckam, Beckum, Beckman — and the occasional beck-HAM from strangers reading it aloud.
- The -ham ending has been the source of easy jokes for as long as English place names have existed. Most children shrug it off, but it's worth hearing out loud a few times first.
- It is climbing steadily, so a child born now may share it with more classmates by high school than the current picture suggests.
