Bastian
Masculine · “from Sebaste”
Bastian is the German-speaking world's everyday form of Sebastian, cut down to two syllables and left to stand on its own. Behind it sits a Greek city name and a third-century Roman martyr whose story spread across Europe; in front of it, Michael Ende's 1979 novel The Neverending Story, whose boy hero is Bastian Balthasar Bux. It ends on that soft -ian that English already knows from Julian and Adrian, so it reads easily on first sight even where it is unfamiliar.

Where it comes from
From Sebastos to Bastian
The story of Bastian
Sebaste was a name given to several cities of the Greek-speaking east in honor of the emperor Augustus, and a man from one of them was a Sebastianus. The name attached itself to a Roman soldier martyred under Diocletian in the third century, and his cult carried it into Italian, Spanish, French and German use through the Middle Ages. German and Swiss speakers wore the long form down to Bastian in ordinary speech, exactly as French speakers arrived at Bastien and the Dutch at Bas. Its appearance on American records is recent, and it followed the same route many clipped European forms have taken — first a household short form, then a full name in its own right.
Meaning
from Sebaste; ultimately from Greek sebastos, 'venerable, revered'
The chain runs backwards: Bastian shortens Sebastian, Latin Sebastianus, 'man of Sebaste'. The city's own name came from Greek sebastos, 'venerable' — the Greek rendering of the imperial title Augustus.

The Canyon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Bastian's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Canyon climbed just as high around 2003, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Canyon's path sketches the road Bastian is walking now.
Bastian sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Recognizable on sight to anyone who knows Sebastian, which spares it the endless spelling-out that most short forms of long names attract.
- Works unchanged in German and close to unchanged in French, Spanish and Dutch — useful for a family with ties on both sides of an ocean.
- Has real short forms already in circulation: Bas, Baz, Basti.
- Rare enough in American classrooms that it stays a person rather than a category, while still sounding entirely familiar.
- Many people will assume it is a nickname and reach for Sebastian on forms, in emails and at roll call. Families who use Bastian as the legal name usually spend some years gently correcting that.
- Two pronunciations circulate — BASS-tee-un and the flatter BAS-chun, which matches the English word 'bastion'. Worth deciding which one you want and saying it first.
- It is uncommon here, so most strangers will meet the name for the first time in your child. That means more questions early on, and fewer mix-ups ever after.
