From Azubah to Azzie
Our story of Azzie
Az- is an unusual front for an English name, and the reason is worth knowing: almost every English word that begins that way is a loan from Arabic. Azure came from the Persian word for lapis by way of Arabic, and the a is a piece of the Arabic article that English swallowed whole. Azimuth came the same road, out of the astronomers. The Az- of this name came from somewhere else entirely, from the Hebrew names the American countryside was still reading out of the Old Testament — Azubah, who was the mother of a king of Judah and whose name means forsaken, sits behind one of the possible full forms. What all of that gives Azzie is a front that sounds borrowed and exotic and is in fact deeply, plainly rural American, written down at a kitchen table in a hand that had no reason to be careful.

Nothing settles what Azzie is short for. Azubah, Azariah and Asenath were all in American use when it appeared, and each of them yields the same two syllables. The families that used it left no note saying which, and the census taker wrote what he heard at the door. The z is the one clue, and it points only to a name beginning Az-, not to which one.

Fashion outlook
Azzie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, brisk and unmistakable when spoken, which few vintage names manage.
- The z gives it a sound almost no other name of its era has.
- It reads as a nickname, which means it is warm before anyone has decided anything else about it.
- It is a name out of one particular American century, and it will read that way to anyone who meets it.
- The spelling is recorded for boys as well as girls, and in the thin recent record it has gone to both.
- Because nobody can say what it is short for, there is no long form to fall back on for a formal document.
Nobody names a baby alone.
