The story of Azura
Lapis lazuli came from Sar-i Sang in Badakhshan, essentially the only source known to the ancient and medieval world, and its ground pigment cost more than gold. The word traveled with the stone from Persian to Arabic to Spanish and French. Azura appears in the American registers rising through the 2010s and is in current use.
Meaning
sky blue
From the English azure, through the Old French azur, the Arabic lazward and the Persian lazhward — the lapis lazuli stone and its color. The initial l was lost in Romance, mistaken for the article. Every stage of the route is documented.
