Aylah
Feminine
Aylah is the English -h spelling of Ayla, a name that arrived in American use from more than one direction at once: Turkish, Hebrew, and a bestselling novel. The final h places it alongside Leah, Hannah and Sarah, spellings readers already know how to handle. Two syllables, an open first vowel, and nothing in it to trip over when said aloud.

The story of Aylah
Ayla is a long-established Turkish given name, from the ordinary Turkish word for the halo around the moon, and it is also read in Hebrew alongside ayala, 'doe'. English-speaking parents met it in a third way: Ayla is the heroine of Jean M. Auel's 1980 novel The Clan of the Cave Bear and the Earth's Children books that followed, which sold in enormous numbers and put the sound in wide circulation. The Aylah spelling belongs to that English-speaking chapter — the same name, refitted with the -h ending that Leah, Dinah and Hannah already carry. It has stayed on US records ever since without ever surging, which is a quieter pattern than most modern spellings manage.
Meaningscholars disagree
'halo of moonlight' (Turkish) or 'doe' (Hebrew)
In Turkish, ayla is the ring of light around the moon — a halo. In Hebrew, ayala means doe or gazelle, and a related word, elah, means oak or terebinth. Both traditions are genuine and neither cancels the other; the spelling Aylah is an English-language variant that sits over the top of both.

AY-lah
AY-lah is the usual American reading. Turkish-speaking families say it closer to EYE-lah, and some English speakers follow that; either way, saying which one you use at the first introduction settles it for good.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Ileana test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aylah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ileana climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ileana's path sketches the road Aylah is walking now.
Aylah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables, three sounds, no silent letters — most people can say it correctly on sight.
- The -h ending follows a pattern English readers already know from Leah, Hannah and Sarah.
- Genuinely at home in Turkish, Hebrew and English-speaking settings, which matters in a multilingual family.
- Its record in the US is long and level rather than a spike, so it is not tied to one fashionable moment.
- Ayla without the h is the more familiar spelling, so expect to correct it fairly often — in registrations, on class lists, in emails.
- The AY-lah and EYE-lah readings both circulate, and which one a new acquaintance guesses will vary.
- She is unlikely to share the name with anyone in her school, which some children enjoy and others find tiring in the years when blending in matters most.
