The story of Ayako
In Japanese, aya is the pattern woven into cloth, the diagonal lines of twill and the figures in silk brocade, and by extension any beautiful design. Ayako Miura, a former schoolteacher who spent years bedridden with tuberculosis, won a newspaper's novel prize with Freezing Point, a story of guilt and forgiveness that became one of the great Japanese bestsellers. Japanese families brought Ayako to Hawaii and the mainland.
