Where it comes from

Our story of Avian

Our story of Avian is a story of a technical word taken as a name. Latin avis gave English aviary, aviation and augury — the last from the Roman practice of reading the future in the flight of birds. Avian is the adjective, and until recently it appeared only in ornithology and epidemiology. American families began registering it in the 2000s, at the same time as Avion and Aviana, and the record does not say whether the Latin or the sound came first.

Meaningscholars disagree

of birds

The likeliest reading is the Latin avis, 'bird', through avianus, 'of birds' — the root also behind aviation and aviary. A second route treats Avian as a modern coinage on the Av- front, alongside Aiden and Avion. Neither is documented as the source of the American name.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Avian went to 96 boys in 2025, but Avyaan, Avyan and Aavyan and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 558, which makes it the 483rd most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,216 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 3,061 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 17,792 for Avian itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The bird meaning is concrete and its link to augury is genuinely interesting.
  • Avi and Ian are two short forms, both complete names in their own right.
  • Three syllables with a front stress, which holds up against a short surname.
What to consider
  • It is a technical English adjective, best known from avian influenza.
  • The stress placement splits between two readings.
  • It is very new as a given name.
