The story of Aurore
Amantine Aurore Lucile Dupin took a man's name to publish under and wore men's clothes in Paris for years, and the second of those was technically a crime. A city ordinance dating from the Revolution required a woman to apply for a permit to dress as a man, renewable, with a doctor's note; it stayed formally on the books into the twenty-first century before anyone got round to repealing it. Her stated reasons were practical as much as anything: men's boots and coats were sturdier, cheaper and warmer, and in a frock coat she could sit in the cheap seats of a theater where women were not admitted. She wrote about eighty novels, ran an estate, and conducted a correspondence with half the writers in Europe, under a name she had assembled herself out of a collaborator's surname and a shortening of a men's first name.

Fashion outlook
Aurore sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is documented, concrete and immediately understood.
- Two syllables with back stress is a compact and definite shape.
- It is the genuine French form rather than an approximation of one.
- English readers will add a syllable at the end unless told otherwise.
- Aurora is far commoner in America and will be written for it.
- It reads as distinctly French, which suits some families and not others.
