Aurianna sits between two names that both have long histories and cannot be assigned to either. Its front syllable belongs to a family of words about gold and dawn; that same syllable names a small village in south-western France, and through the village, the earliest period of European art anyone can point to.

Our story of Aurianna
A cave near the village of Aurignac in the French Pyrenees was cleared out in the middle of the nineteenth century, and the tools found in it turned out to be characteristic of a whole period. Archaeologists named the period after the village, and the Aurignacian is now the label for the earliest widely accepted Upper Palaeolithic culture in Europe — the one that leaves behind carved figures, bone flutes and painted animals, tens of thousands of years old. A lion-headed human figure carved from mammoth ivory belongs to it. So does the oldest undisputed musical instrument anyone has found. None of this has anything to do with the name Aurianna; it is a coincidence of syllables. But it is a reminder that the shortest pieces of a name often turn out to be doing the most work somewhere else.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Two readings compete and nothing separates them. The name can be read as Aurora crossed with the Anna ending, or as Arianna with a u inserted. The gold and dawn senses belong to the Latin words, not necessarily to this name, and claiming one would be choosing rather than reporting.
Pronouncing Aurianna
or-ee-AH-nuh
Four syllables with the stress on the third. The au at the front says the vowel of for, not the vowel of out, and that is the part strangers get wrong.

Fashion outlook
Aurianna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Four syllables give it three quite different short forms to choose between.
- The ending is the commonest one in English women's names, so the back half is never a problem.
- It is uncommon without being unfamiliar: every piece of it is already known.
- The au at the front is read two ways and the name gets mispronounced on first sight.
- Arianna, Aurianne and Auriana are all in the record and will be written for it.
- There is no settled meaning, because there is no settled parent name.
