Asiah
Masculine
Asiah is given to both — 1,049 boys and 1,738 girls since 1880. See Asiah as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Asiah is the continent's name with an extra letter, and also a spelling used for centuries elsewhere: in Malay and Indonesian it is the ordinary written form of Asiya, the name Islamic tradition gives to the wife of Pharaoh who drew Moses from the water. So a spelling that looks improvised in English is standard somewhere else, and has been for generations. In the mouth it can go two ways — the soft AY-zhuh of the map, or the fuller ah-SEE-ah.
How old is the name Asiah?
Asiah first appears in US birth records in 1999 — 26 years ago. The typical Asiah is a kid of about 4 — this name's wave is very recent. About 1,000 people named Asiah are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Asiah
The oldest documented thread is Arabic Asiya, honored in Islamic tradition as the wife of Pharaoh who raised Moses; she is remembered as one of the greatest women of faith, and her name spread with Islam from the Arabic-speaking world into Turkish as Asiye, into Persian as Asiyeh, and into Malay and Indonesian, where Asiah is the standard spelling. A second, quite separate thread is simply the continent, which English-speaking parents have used as a given name for some decades, with -ah endings appearing alongside it. A third is the Hebrew men's name Asaiah, borne in the Book of Chronicles by an official of King Josiah. Asiah's use for American boys is recent and concentrated in a few states, with Texas, Georgia and California leading.

Three separate roads meet at this spelling, and which one applies depends on the family. As a form of Arabic Asiya, it is usually linked to a root meaning to console or to tend the weak. As a form of the place name Asia, it comes through Greek Asía, whose own origin is not settled. And Hebrew scripture carries a men's name Asaiah, understood as 'the Lord has made', which some English spellings bring close to Asiah.

Pronouncing Asiah
AY-zhuh (or ah-SEE-ah)
Both are in real use. English speakers default to the continent's pronunciation, AY-zhuh; families using the Arabic or Malay name generally say ah-SEE-ah, with the stress on the middle. Whichever you choose, you will be saying it out loud for people fairly often.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Tarek test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Asiah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tarek climbed just as high around 1985, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tarek's path sketches the road Asiah is walking now.
Asiah is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

Where Asiah is headed
Asiah looks set to keep climbing gently, with roughly 25% more babies a year by 2030 if the current curve holds. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- The pronunciation is guessable on sight for most Americans, because the first reading is simply the continent's name.
- A standard, long-used spelling in Malay and Indonesian rather than a modern English invention.
- Works across Arabic, Turkish, Persian and Southeast Asian settings through its close relatives Asiya, Asiye and Asiyeh.
- Short forms already exist — Sia, Asa, Ash — without anyone having to invent one.
- Rare enough in the US that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- In American records the plain spelling Asia is used far more often for girls, so a boy named Asiah will meet assumptions on forms, rosters and roll calls. Worth being ready with a calm correction rather than surprised by it.
- Two live pronunciations means you will be choosing one and repeating it. Teachers and doctors' offices will not know which you use until you tell them.
- The final -h is easy to drop; expect Asia in emails and on paperwork for life.
- The name's American wave is young, so nearly everyone who carries it here is a child — there is not yet a generation of grown Asiahs for people to picture.
