The story of Ashten
The tree is in serious trouble. A fungal disease arrived in Europe from Asia in the nineteen-nineties and reached Britain about twenty years ago; it kills a high proportion of the trees it infects, and current estimates suggest the great majority of Britain's ash will die. Ash is the third commonest tree in the country, it holds up a whole ecology of insects, lichens and birds that live on nothing else, and its loss is comparable to what happened to the elms a generation ago. A small number of trees appear to have natural resistance, and the entire hope for the species rests on them. The name will outlast the tree it describes.
Meaning
Ash-tree settlement
Old English aesc, an ash tree, and tun, an enclosed settlement. There are a great many places called this because ash was everywhere and enclosing ground was what settlement consisted of. The surname identifies a family from one of them and describes nobody.

Pronouncing Ashten
ASH-tun
Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second is reduced to nothing, which is why Ashton, Ashten and Ashtin are said identically and all three appear in the records.

Fashion outlook
Ashten sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Ash is a short, current, unisex everyday form waiting inside it.
- The name has a real English origin that can be checked on any map.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- Ashton is the standard spelling by a wide margin and will be written instead.
- The record carries this spelling for girls as well as boys, so it signals nothing.
- Three spellings circulate together and none is audibly different from the others.
