The Asante built one of the great states of West Africa, and the object at the center of it was a stool. The Golden Stool is said to have come down from the sky onto the lap of the first king; it holds the soul of the nation, no one sits on it, and a British attempt to demand it started a war. Ashanty is the American spelling of that people's name, given as a name to daughters.

Where it comes from

The story of Ashanty

The Asante confederacy formed in the late seventeenth century and became the dominant power of the region, fighting a long series of wars with Britain before being annexed. The name entered American use in the second half of the twentieth century, when African American families began drawing deliberately on African peoples and places for names. It was then given a large second push by a singer who used it alone, without a surname, and whose first record arrived at the start of the 2000s — which is where the y-spelling and much of the name's American record belong.

Meaning

of the Asante people

Ashanti is the English form of Asante, the name of an Akan people of what is now Ghana and of the kingdom they built. It is an ethnonym rather than a word with a meaning — it names a people, and the usual etymology offered for it is contested among Akan speakers themselves.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ashanty went to 6 girls in 2025, but Ashanti is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 95, which makes it the 865th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,343 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 16,919 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Ashanty itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It names a real people with a documented and remarkable history behind it.
  • Three open syllables that survive any accent intact.
  • The sound is familiar to every American, so nothing has to be explained aloud.
  • It sits well with long or consonant-heavy surnames.
What to consider
  • Ashanti is much the commoner spelling and will be substituted on nearly everything.
  • It names a living people, and some will feel that carries a responsibility a personal name usually does not.
  • The name is closely tied to one performer and one stretch of years, which dates it.
