Ashante

Ashante is given to both — 1,458 girls and 172 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Ashante names a people, a language and a former empire, and it is not a word with a meaning in the way a name usually is. The Asante built one of the most formidable states in West Africa, ran an administration and an army that repeatedly held off a European power, and defeated a British force in the field on the first serious attempt.

Our story of Ashante
In eighteen twenty-four a British governor marched into Asante territory with a small force and a great deal of confidence and was killed along with most of his men; his head was taken as a trophy and the defeat was total. Four more wars followed across the century, the British lost more than they expected each time, and the kingdom was not finally annexed until nineteen hundred, after a rising provoked by a British governor demanding to sit on the golden stool that embodied the nation's soul. It is one of the longest and most effective resistances any West African state mounted. The name reached American registers in the nineteen seventies with a wave of names asserting African identity, and it is worth carrying with the history attached rather than as a pleasant sound.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The name identifies a people and their language rather than translating into anything. Explanations offered for it inside the tradition connect it to a phrase about war, and outside the tradition to other roots, and none is settled. Used as a personal name in America it is a borrowing of a national name, which carries an identification rather than a meaning.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. Twi says the name with a fuller first vowel and a different final one, and without the English glide, so the American pronunciation is an approximation rather than a transcription.

Fashion outlook
Ashante sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It carries a genuine and substantial history that can be told in a few sentences.
- The sound is straightforward and needs no coaching from anyone.
- It works on the register for either child, which the record confirms.
- It names a living people, and using it as a personal name is not neutral for everyone.
- There is no meaning to give: it is an identification, not a word.
- Ashanti is the commoner spelling and this one will be converted into it.
