Where it comes from

The story of Aryah

The lion of Judah runs from Genesis through the arms of Jerusalem to Ethiopian imperial titles. Aryeh has been used continuously in Jewish naming and is masculine in Hebrew. The feminine Aryah and Arya appear in American records rising through the 2010s, helped by a television character, and are in current use.

Meaning

lion

From the Hebrew aryeh, 'lion'. Jacob calls Judah a lion's whelp in Genesis 49, and the lion became the tribe's emblem and the city's. The word is ordinary Hebrew and the meaning undisputed. A separate Sanskrit arya, 'noble', is sometimes claimed but is not the source.

About 1 girl in 157 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 13,737 for Aryah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off
