Where it comes from

The story of Arnetta

The -etta ending arrived in English from Italian, where it is a genuine diminutive, and was then applied to bases that Italian had never touched. Once loose, it attached itself to almost anything: Arnetta, Ornetta, Loretta, Rosetta, Jonetta. Alongside it ran -ita, borrowed from Spanish and doing exactly the same job, and the record carries Arnita beside Arnetta. Neither of them is a translation of anything, and neither is wrong; they are two endings competing to do one piece of American work, which is to make a woman's name out of a man's without simply adding an a.

Meaning

eagle power

Arnold joins two Germanic elements, one naming a bird of prey and one meaning rule or power. The ending on this name carries no meaning; it is a shape rather than a word.

Fashion outlook

Arnetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Every part of it is familiar, so the name is read correctly at sight.
  • It carries three short forms, each a standing name somewhere.
  • The stress in the middle gives it a lift most English names of its length do not have.
What to consider
  • Arnita, Ornetta and Arnetta are all in the record and are confused constantly.
  • The Italian-looking ending has no Italian history behind it here.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the turn of the twentieth century.
