Where it comes from

Our story of Arminta

Restoration and eighteenth-century comedy ran on a stock of names that signaled character before a line was spoken: Lady Wishfort, Mrs Malaprop, Sir Fopling Flutter. Alongside the jokes there was a set of pleasant invented names for the young women the audience was meant to like, and Araminta is one of them. Congreve used it. So did others, repeatedly, until it stopped sounding theatrical and started sounding simply elegant, at which point real families began using it. It crossed to America and spread through the South, where it was shortened in speech and written down short. A name that began as a piece of stage furniture ended up on gravestones.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Araminta has no ancestry that anybody has traced; it appears in English comedy of the late seventeenth century and not before. A coined name has no etymology to recover, and this shortened form adds another step away from whatever the coiner had in mind.

Arminta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1920, with 26 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Arminta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Minta comes off it as a short form and is itself in the record as a name.
  • The stress is unmistakable, so it is rarely mispronounced on a first reading.
  • It has a documented place in the early American record rather than being modern.
What to consider
  • Araminta is the longer and better-known form, so the missing syllable will be restored by some readers.
  • It reads as a name of a much older generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
  • A coined name has no meaning to give, which disappoints people who ask.
