The story of Armida
Torquato Tasso finished Gerusalemme Liberata in the early fifteen-eighties, and the Armida episodes — the enchanted garden, the abandoned knight, the sorceress who destroys her own palace — became the most adapted passages in European literature after Ovid. Lully, Handel, Gluck, Haydn, Rossini and Dvorak all wrote operas called Armida, and there are dozens more. The name spread through Italy and Spain on the strength of it and came to America with Italian and Mexican families. It is one of the very few names in ordinary use whose entire existence can be traced to a single book.

Not established
The name was made up by a poet and has no earlier source. Attempts to derive it from Latin or Arabic are working backwards from the sound; Tasso appears simply to have wanted something that read as exotic to Italian ears.

Fashion outlook
Armida sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a standing name across Italy, Spain and Latin America.
- Its origin is documented down to the book and the decade, which very few names can offer.
- Every sound in it is easy for an English speaker.
- It has no meaning, because it was invented rather than inherited.
- The character behind it is a sorceress who traps a man, which some families will want to know.
- Outside Italian and Spanish-speaking company it is unfamiliar and will need spelling.
