The story of Armando
The name begins as a Germanic compound, Hariman, carried into what became France by Frankish speakers in the early medieval period. French mouths softened it into Armand, dropping the opening H and shifting the vowels, while German and later English kept the older shape as Hermann and Herman. From French it traveled across the Pyrenees and the Alps, picking up the Romance -o ending that gave Spanish, Italian and Portuguese their Armando. In the United States it has been recorded steadily for generations, and it remains most strongly represented in Texas, California and Florida — the same states where Spanish has deep and continuous roots.
