Where it comes from

Our story of Armandina

The French Academy was set up in the seventeenth century to regulate the French language, and it has been at it ever since. There are exactly forty members, called the immortals, elected for life, and a new one is chosen only when an old one dies. Their principal task is a dictionary of the French language, begun almost immediately, and after four centuries they are still working on it: editions appear roughly every hundred years and the current one has been in progress for decades. The institution has no legal power and its rulings on grammar are routinely ignored by French speakers, which has not slowed it down at all.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Armand is the French form of a Germanic compound, and its elements are documented. This feminine form is not documented in French and appears to have been built in Spanish-speaking or American use.

Fashion outlook

Armandina sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Mandy and Dina are both available as short forms and both are established names.
  • It works in English and Spanish-speaking households without adjustment.
  • Four open syllables carry well and are easy to hear across a room.
What to consider
  • Four syllables is a lot for an American form, and it will be shortened by other people before you shorten it.
  • Armandine and Armanda are both in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you.
  • No origin is documented for the feminine, so the meaning question belongs to the man's name.
