Where it comes from
From Areios to Arius
The story of Arius
Arius held that the Son was created and not co-eternal with the Father, and the Council of Nicaea in 325 was called to settle it; the Nicene Creed's insistence on 'begotten, not made' is a direct answer to him. He is one of the few people a creed was written against. The name is in current American use.

Not established
The Greek Areios is generally read as 'of Ares', the war god, whose own name has no recovered etymology. Some American use may be a modern coinage on the -ius ending. Neither is established. The historical figure is documented.

The Jeanpierre test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Arius's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jeanpierre climbed just as high around 1967, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jeanpierre's path sketches the road Arius is walking now.
Arius sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
