Ariona
Feminine
Ariona is a name that sits between three others without being any of them, and the space it occupies is a real one: four syllables, all open, nothing hard to say. Whether it was reached from a Greek name, an American state or a fresh start is not something the record will tell anybody.

The story of Ariona
The nearest ancient name belongs to a story Herodotus tells with obvious enjoyment. Arion was a celebrated singer, sailing home with the money he had earned abroad, when the crew decided to take it and told him to jump. He asked to sing once more in full costume, sang, jumped — and was carried to shore on the back of a dolphin drawn to the music. When the ship reached port the sailors reported him dead at sea, at which point he walked out in the same costume. Herodotus is careful to say that this is what the Corinthians and the Lesbians say, which is his way of declining to vouch for it, and he mentions a bronze statue of a man on a dolphin that was still standing in his own day.

Three routes are equally plausible. Ariana, which was a Greek geographical term for the eastern part of the Iranian plateau, is one letter away. Arizona is two, and place names of that shape have been used as women's names in America since the nineteenth century. And the name may simply have been made, as many four-syllable names of its decades were, from sounds that go together well. None of these can be shown, and a meaning printed for the name would belong to whichever one was picked.
How the name formed
- Ariana serves as a Greek name for the eastern Iranian lands
- Arizona becomes an American place name and then a woman's name
- American parents build open four-syllable names from familiar sounds
- Ariona appears in the records without a documented source

Fashion outlook
Ariona sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Every sound in it is open and easy, with no cluster anywhere
- Long and formal on paper with several short forms ready for daily use
- Distinctive without being difficult for anyone to pronounce
- It is one letter from a much commoner name, and that name will be written instead more often than not.
- There is no meaning to give a child, only a set of names it stands near.
- Four syllables is a lot for daily American use, so the short form will carry most of the load.
