The Greek harmonia meant a joining or a fastening — the fitted joint where two pieces of timber meet — and it comes from a verb meaning to fit together, which also gives the word for a chariot and for the shoulder joint. The Greeks applied it to music as a metaphor for proper fitting: the tuning of a scale, the correct relation of intervals, rather than the modern sense of simultaneous notes, which Greek music did not much use. Philosophers then took it further and used harmonia for the right proportion of parts in a soul, a body or a city. The whole vocabulary of concord in European thought rests on a word for a well-made joint.
