The story of Arieanna
A clew, spelled that way, was an ordinary English word for a ball of yarn. Because the most famous ball of yarn in European storytelling was the one that let a man walk into a labyrinth and come out again, the word came to mean anything that guides you through a problem, and by the eighteenth century it was being spelled clue and used for a piece of evidence in an investigation. The thread is still in the word. Detective fiction, police procedure and crossword puzzles all rest on a metaphor from a Bronze Age Cretan story, and the woman who supplied the thread was then abandoned on an island by the man she had saved, which is the part the etymology does not carry.

Most holy
The Greek is usually read as a superlative of a word meaning holy or pure, which would make it most holy, but the second element has other proposed readings and the name may be pre-Greek, belonging to the language spoken in Crete before Greek arrived. That would explain a great deal, since the story it belongs to is Cretan. The extra letters in this spelling change nothing.

Fashion outlook
Arieanna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The name is at home in Italian, Spanish, French and Greek with only small changes.
- Ari and Anna are two short forms in completely different registers, one modern and one ancient.
- The rhythm is easy and the name is never mispronounced twice once it has been heard.
- Arianna, Ariana and Aryanna are all commoner, so this spelling will be corrected constantly.
- Four syllables is a long name for daily use and a short form will be chosen early.
- The extra e is silent, so the difference exists on paper and nowhere else.
