Where it comes from

The story of Ariani

Ariadne gives Theseus the thread that brings him out of the labyrinth and is then abandoned on Naxos — one of the most retold stories in Greek myth. Italian made Arianna of the name and Spanish Ariana, and both have been widely used. Ariani appears in recent American records alongside Ariana, Arianny and Ariadna, and it also occurs independently in Indonesian and Malay naming from an unrelated root.

Meaningscholars disagree

most holy

Ariadne is generally read from Greek elements meaning very and holy, in a Cretan dialect form. Ariana is the Italian and Spanish development of it. Whether Ariani was formed on that line or built from the Ari- and -ani pieces of modern American naming is not documented.

#764
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Ariani went to 46 girls in 2025, but Arianny, Ariany and Arianni are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 196, which makes it the 764th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,578 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 8,200 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 34,941 for Ariani itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented line back to one of the best-known figures of Greek myth.
  • Three complete short forms, each with its own separate history.
  • Open vowels make it easy to say in most languages.
What to consider
  • Ariana is far more common and will be assumed and written in its place.
  • Four syllables is long for early handwriting.
  • Ariani, Arianni and Ariany all appear and none is dominant.
