The story of Argelia
Four small islands lay off the shore where the city was built, and the Arabic name of the place describes them: the islands. In the sixteenth century they were joined to the mainland with a causeway and breakwater to make the harbor, so the feature the city is named after stopped existing as such — the islets are now part of the port. The name went from the city to the country when the country was created as a colonial entity, so a modern nation of more than forty million people is named, at two removes, after four rocks that were built over four hundred years ago.
