The story of Ardie
Mary Arden, Shakespeare's mother, came from an old Warwickshire family named for the Forest of Arden, the wooded country north of Stratford, and her son put the forest into As You Like It as a green refuge from the court. Arden became an English surname and later an American first name, and around it grew Ardella, Ardith and others for girls. Ardie was the pet form of all of them, and for boys also of Arthur and Archibald, which is why the record shows it almost evenly split.

Fashion outlook
Ardie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It works for a girl or a boy, each by its own road.
- It is friendly and easy to say.
- It connects to a real English literary landscape.
- It reads as a nickname, and some will ask for the full name.
- Because it is split between the sexes, nobody will know from paper whether an Ardie is a girl or a boy.
Nobody names a baby alone.
