Ardelia
Feminine
Ardelia has a Latin word behind it that nobody wants to translate. The Roman satirists used ardelio for a busybody: the man who bustles about looking occupied, arrives everywhere first and is useful nowhere. Whether the name descends from that word or from the verb meaning to burn is genuinely disputed, and the two possibilities could hardly be further apart.

Our story of Ardelia
The name had a second life in English poetry as a pastoral disguise. Seventeenth and eighteenth-century poets wrote under invented classical names, and Anne Finch, Countess of Winchilsea, used this one for herself across a whole body of work. She wrote about being a woman who wrote: about being told that a pen was a presumption, that a needle would suit her better, and that anything she produced would be judged as a curiosity rather than as verse. She published very little in her lifetime and was rediscovered a century later by poets who found in her exactly what she had said nobody would look for. The persona name outlasted most of the poems.

Not established
Two Latin candidates and no way to choose. One is a comic noun for a meddler, recorded in Roman epigram; the other is the verb meaning to burn, which would give a reading about ardor. Reference works generally print the second because it is the flattering one, but the first is the word that actually exists as a noun, and the name may descend from neither.
How the name formed
- A Latin noun for a busybody, or a verb about burning
- A pastoral name in seventeenth-century English verse
- A poet's own persona across a body of work

Three or four syllables depending on how much weight the ending gets. American speech tends to compress the last two into one, which is why the name sounds shorter than it looks.
