Archie
Masculine · “genuinely bold”
Archie is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 56,244 boys against 1,291 girls since 1880. See Archie as a girl name
Archibald means genuinely bold. The first element is a Germanic word for what is real or precious rather than counterfeit — the same one behind the ark in archangel is a different word, but this one meant unfeigned — and the second is plain boldness. Archie is the Scottish short form, and it has come back in Britain before it came back here.

The story of Archie
Archibald was among the standard Scottish men's names for six centuries, and Archie went with it. The short form crossed to America in the nineteenth century and was well used until about 1930, after which it went quiet for two generations. Its return began in Britain: Archie reached the top of the English and Scottish charts in the 2010s, and America has followed at a distance. It is one of the clearer cases of a name reviving on one side of the Atlantic and being re-imported.
Meaning
genuinely bold
From the Germanic ercan, meaning genuine, precious or unfeigned, and bald, bold or brave. The compound reached Britain through Norman French and became particularly Scottish — the Campbells and the Douglases both used it heavily, which is why it reads as Highland even though the elements are continental.

Fashion outlook
Archie is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- It is warm and short without being childish, which few diminutives manage.
- Archibald sits behind it as a formal option with real Scottish history.
- It currently charts in three countries at once, which very few names do.
- The meaning is documented and takes two words to give.
- It is rising quickly in Britain and beginning to here, so a boy will meet others of his age.
- For older Americans the name belongs to a comic-book character and a sitcom patriarch, in that order.
- Nearly every child given this spelling is a boy; the record's girls are very few.
