The story of Antwanette

Marie Antoinette is remembered for 'Let them eat cake', but the line, as 'qu'ils mangent de la brioche', appears in Rousseau's Confessions, written when she was a child in Austria, attributed to an unnamed great princess, and no evidence has her saying it. Antoinette Perry, an actress and director who led the American Theatre Wing during the Second World War, died in 1946, and the next year the Wing named its new awards for her; they have been called the Tonys ever since. Antwanette is one of the spellings American families used for Antoinette.
