Antonette drops the i and, in doing so, changes which parent the name has. Antoinette is built on the French Antoine; Antonette is built on the Latin Antonia, which is older and belonged to a Roman family. One letter moves the name from eighteenth-century France to the Roman republic.

Where it comes from

The story of Antonette

Latin produced Antonia directly; French produced Antoine and then Antoinette by adding its own diminutive. Both reached English, and English speakers combined them freely because the difference is one unstressed letter that nobody sounds. Italian meanwhile made Antonietta from the Latin base with the Italian diminutive, and that form crossed to America with Italian emigration in exactly the period this name appears. Antonette is likeliest to be that Italian name written by an English-speaking clerk, which is a more specific history than the spelling suggests.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Antonius was a major Roman gens name and its meaning has never been recovered — it is probably Etruscan, and Etruscan is only partly deciphered. Antonia is the feminine and was borne by several women of that family. The reading sometimes given, priceless, comes from a false connection to a Greek flower word made centuries later and is not an etymology. The -ette ending is a French diminutive and adds nothing to the blank.

an-tuh-NET, three syllables, stress at the back, the middle reduced. Antoinette is said with a w sound in the middle, an-twuh-NET, so this spelling is genuinely a syllable simpler rather than merely a letter shorter.

Fashion outlook

Antonette sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It points at the Latin name rather than the French one, which is the older and less crowded line.
  • Toni and Netta are both usable short forms in different registers.
  • It avoids the w cluster that makes Antoinette awkward for English mouths.
What to consider
  • Antoinette is far better known and this will be read as a misspelling of it.
  • The meaning is genuinely unknown, so a family wanting one to hand over will not find it.
  • The -ette ending places the name in an earlier American period and it has not come back.
